Saint Athanasius On the Incarnation (Translated by Archibald Robertson)

One of the most important works of Christian theology, the treatise “On the Incarnation” was written by the fourth century Egyptian religious leader St. Athanasius of Alexandria. An influential Christian theologian and church elder, St. Athanasius, also known as Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor, and Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria from 328 AD to 373 AD. St. Athanasius played an important role in the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD where Roman Emperor Constantine the Great convened the council to address the question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was the son of God and distinct from his Father. “On the Incarnation” expands with clarity on the conclusion reached by the First Council of Nicaea, that God became man through His son, Jesus of Nazareth, and through Jesus, we too may become one with God. While brief, St. Athanasius explores in detail why God became flesh through Jesus and why this transformation was necessary to save the corrupted human soul and prepare it for a perfect and immortal union with God. This treatise, by one of the most important and influential teachers of Christian philosophy, is an essential read for all students of the Christian faith. This edition follows the translation of Archibald Robertson.

Richard A. Holland Jr. God, Time, and the Incarnation

The dominant view among Christian theologians and philosophers is that God is timeless–that he exists outside of time in an «atemporal» eternity. In God, Time, and the Incarnation, Richard Holland offers a critical evaluation of this traditional view in light of the most central doctrine of Christianity: the Incarnation of Christ. Holland reviews the history of this controversy, highlighting the various theological problems for which atemporal models have been offered as a solution. He asserts the central importance of the Incarnation for Christian theology and evaluates several atemporal models in light of this doctrine. Finally, he suggests that the traditional atemporal view is not compatible with a robust and orthodox view of the Incarnation. This book rejects the traditional atemporal view of God's relationship to time and argues, based on the Incarnation, that God experiences temporal sequence in his existence.

Athanasius Saint Patriarch of Alexandria In Illud: Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre

Cristina Maria Cervone Poetics of the Incarnation

The Gospel of John describes the Incarnation of Christ as «the Word made flesh»—an intriguing phrase that uses the logic of metaphor but is not traditionally understood as merely symbolic. Thus the conceptual puzzle of the Incarnation also draws attention to language and form: what is the Word; how is it related to language; how can the Word become flesh? Such theological questions haunt the material imagery engaged by medieval writers, the structural forms that give their writing shape, and even their ideas about language itself. In Poetics of the Incarnation , Cristina Maria Cervone examines the work of fourteenth-century writers who, rather than approaching the mystery of the Incarnation through affective identification with the Passion, elected to ponder the intellectual implications of the Incarnation in poetical and rhetorical forms. Cervone argues that a poetics of the Incarnation becomes the grounds for working through the philosophical and theological implications of language, at a point in time when Middle English was emerging as a legitimate, if contested, medium for theological expression. In brief lyrics and complex narratives, late medieval English writers including William Langland, Julian of Norwich, Walter Hilton, and the anonymous author of the Charters of Christ took the relationship between God and humanity as a jumping-off point for their meditations on the nature of language and thought, the elision between the concrete and the abstract, the complex relationship between acting and being, the work done by poetry itself in and through time, and the meaning latent within poetical forms. Where Passion-devoted writing would focus on the vulnerability and suffering of the fleshly body, these texts took imaginative leaps, such as when they depict the body of Christ as a lily or the written word. Their Incarnational poetics repeatedly call attention to the fact that, in theology as in poetics, form matters.

Saint Anselm Anselm The Works of Saint Anselm (Translated by Sidney Norton Deane)

Saint Anselm of Canterbury was a Benedictine monk and philosopher, known as the father of scholasticism, whose works are impressive testaments to the historic and social significance of the Christian religion. In the “Proslogium”, or “Discourse on the Existence of God” we find the origination of the ontological argument for the existence of God. Saint Anselm’s rationalizations for Christian beliefs are continued in his “Monologium” or “Monologue” in which he argues that anyone of reasonable intelligence should be able to see proof for the existence of God in examining the various degrees of good and evil in the world. “Cur Deus Homo” or “Why God Became Man” discusses how Jesus Christ was sent to atone for God’s dissatisfaction with mankind, defending God’s honor and justice. Saint Anselm’s ideas were not universally accepted, which is exhibited by the rebuttal of Benedictine monk Gaunilo, “In Behalf of the Fool”, a work which is included along with Saint Anslem’s response in this volume. Because Saint Anselm’s rationalization for spirituality did not rely on empirical evidence but rather was based purely on intuitive reasoning his beliefs were truly a testament of his personal faith in God. Saint Anselm’s writings, as well as the critique by Gaunilo, remain to this day as critical expositions on Christian theology. This collection of Saint Anselm’s works follows the translation of Sidney Norton Deane.

Ann Pederson The Geography of God’s Incarnation

What does geography have to do with the incarnation of God and with our spiritual lives as Christians? We will embark on a theological road trip that explores how geographies are at the heart of understanding of God's incarnation in the world. It is no surprise to Christians that the center of the incarnation is the person of Jesus Christ–God in flesh made manifest. However, it might be a stretch for some Christians to imagine that the promise that God has become flesh is not only in a person but also in a place: in the creation. Christians need to expand what incarnation means and what it means to be created in the image of God so that the scope of God's creative and redemptive action and work indeed reaches to the scope of all things: from the outer reaches of space to the inner reaches of our hearts. To be the creatures of God that God calls us to be requires a kind of dual citizenship: within the details of our daily life, attending to the needs of our neighbors, simultaneously knowing we are part of a greater cosmos whose future is still unfolding.

Jonathan Bonomo Incarnation and Sacrament

The nineteenth century Eucharistic controversy between Charles Hodge and John Williamson Nevin is an important episode in the history of American Christianity. Hodge and Nevin battled over issues that lie at the heart of Christian faith and piety, such as: Why did God become man? What bearing does the incarnation of Christ have on the redemption of the world? How are believers on earth united with the ascended Christ who is in heaven? Is Christ really present in the Lord's Supper? And if so, then how is he made to be present? These are just a few of the age-old questions that Charles Hodge and John W. Nevin sought to answer, and over which they came to vigorously contend. Incarnation and Sacrament provides an in-depth historical and theological analysis and assessment of the controversy that arose between these two great nineteenth century American theologians. By doing so, it aims to provide some illumination on the theological heritage of the Protestant churches in the United States of the twenty-first century.

Saint Anselm Anselm The Works of Saint Anselm (Prologium, Monologium, In Behalf of the Fool, and Cur Deus Homo)

Anselm of Canterbury, later canonized in the 1100's, was a Benedictine monk and philosopher who is known as the father of scholasticism. He is also the founder of the ontological argument, saying that God exists because of his infinite power and authority over mankind. His written works are known for their rationalization of faith based on spiritual truths found within the Christian belief, which is detailed in «Proslogium.» He believed in varying degrees of «good» and «bad,» which meant that there must be an ultimate goodness with which to compare «good» and «bad.» For Saint Anselm in «Monologium,» this ultimate goodness is God. «Why God Became Man» discusses how Jesus Christ was sent to atone for God's dissatisfaction with mankind, defending God's honor and justice. Saint Anselm's ideas were not universally accepted. One rebuttal came in the form of «In Behalf of the Fool,» a response to and critique of Saint Anselm's works written by the Benedictine monk Gaunilo. Today, Saint Anselm's writings, as well as the critique by Gaunilo, remain critical to anyone studying Christian theology. Saint Anselm's rationalization based purely on intuitive reasoning is astonishing. Because Saint Anselm did not rely on empirical evidence for faith, his beliefs were truly a test of his personal faith in God. Saint Anselm and his works are both impressive testaments to the historic and social significance of the Christian religion.
